Syllabus:

Grading: Homework 30%, in-class mid-term 25%, Final 2 hour Exam: 45%.

Thresholds: 90%=A, 85%=A-, 80%=B+, 77%= B, 73%=B-, 70%=C+, 65%=C, 60%=C- (56%=D+, 53%=D, 50%=D-).

Curriculum in brief: "Vector and tensor methods, motion of rigid bodies, vibration, coupled circuits, Lagrange's and Hamilton's equations, principle of least action".

"Student learning outcomes": acquire intermediate knowledge of classical mechanics, develop your 'applied' mathematical skills, particularly vector calculus and linear algebra and, using those skills, be able to tackle challenging classical mechanics problems..

There will be weekly. Mostly based on the textbook Exercises (solving additional textbook exercises that are not assigned = good). CM employs a range of mathematics skills and the best way to learn these skills is by yourself through practice. Expect a few hours of homework a week. I suggest that you compare notes at the end with a friend (no plagiarism, including the www). In an answer I expect to see full working's, without (obvious) lines skipped to make sure that I see that you understand the physics. Homework is due at 5.30pm (start of class) on the day due. Homework will be docked 50% if submitted before 12pm the following day, 0% after that..

There will be one mid-term test most likely on the 17th October. Test will be open book, open notes*, covering roughly the material of the first 6 weeks, and will be approx. 75 mins long..

Last Saturday of exam period: 16th December, 10.30am-12.30pm also in P-149. Open book, open notes*, will cover everything.
Open notes = my lecture notes + your annotations.
