JAPC - Three birds and one CanonSpeaker: Prof. Milton S. Torikachvili, Dept. of Physics, SDSU Topic: "Three birds and one Canon (or how to study phase transitions in solids using hydrostatic pressures)" Time: 2:00 PM, Friday, November 16th, 2007 Place: P-148 (refreshments will be served at 1:45 PM in P145A)
Abstract: Hydrostatic pressure is a very powerful tool in condensed matter physics, particularly for studies of electron and magnetic systems near a phase transition. In this colloquium I will discuss the physics involved in the phase transition of three systems that we studied recently in hydrostatic pressures up to 25 kbar. These systems are compounds of rare-earth and actinide elements, and the ground states include charge-density-wave, ferromagnetism, antiferromagnetism, and Kondo.
