JAPC - How to Read the Universe: Science Fiction and ScienceSpeaker: Prof. Calvin Johnson, Dept. of Physics, SDSU Topic: "How to Read the Universe: Science Fiction and Science" Time: 2:00 PM, Friday, September 7th, 2007 Place: P-148 (refreshments will be served at 1:45 PM in P145A)
Abstract: Science is not mythology, but to the public it often function as if it were mythology. This is most apparent in the literature of science fiction, which is less about the findings of science than our attitudes towards science. I will discuss the many roles science plays in science fiction, and how science and science fiction both differ from other kinds of narratives. You can view JAPC upcoming talks or the archive.
