JAPC - The Role of the Medical Physicist in Gamma Knife Radiosurgery of the BrainSpeaker: Dr. Steven Goetsch, San Diego Gamma Knife Center Topic: "The Role of the Medical Physicist in Gamma Knife Radiosurgery of the Brain" Time: 2:00 PM, Friday, February 16, 2007 Place: P-148 (refreshments will be served at 1:45 PM in P146A)
Abstract: Medical physics has existed informally for about 100 years and formally for at least the last 49 years. Medical physicists are physicists trained in radiological physics, nuclear medicine, radiation safety and diverse other disciplines. Gamma Knife Radiosurgery is a form of outpatient surgery which allows neurosurgeons and radiation oncologists to treat targets in the human brain in a single treatment without opening the skull. The medical physicist is key to this procedure, calibrating the unit, acquiring and registering images, helping with planning the procedure and treating the patient, all in the space of a few hours. The role of the medical physicist in American medical practice will be developed. You can view JAPC upcoming talks or the archive. Obligatory disclaimer
