JAPC - 99Ru Mossbauer Spectroscopy

Speaker: Professor Mike DeMarco, Buffalo State University

Topic: "99Ru Mossbauer Spectroscopy: The Physicist Gamma Ray Microscope used to view the Coexistence of Superconductivity and Magnetism in GdSr2RuCu2O8"

Time: 2:00 PM, Friday, February 9, 2007

Place: P-148 (refreshments will be served at 1:45 PM in P146A)

Abstract: The first half of the talk will be an overview of the 99Ru Mossbauer effect presenting how it uncovers the most local electron information available on materials through gamma ray measurements. The second part of the talk will show how Mossbauer measurements have recently been used to uncover the two dimensional ferromagnetism which coexists with superconductivity in GdSr2RuCu2O8. The final part of the talk will mention future measurements in a 9 Tesla external magnetic field.
