          Congratulations to Rita Philavanh, a Physics Major, who has been
          selected for a <a href="http://www.csrc.sdsu.edu/csrc/students/niw.php">NIW</a>
          (New Interdisciplinary Workforce) fellowship from the NIH,
          administered through the <a href="http://www.csrc.sdsu.edu/">CSRC</a>.
          She will be working with <a href="http://www.sci.sdsu.edu/~abaljon/">Prof. Baljon</a>
          and study computationally the mechanical properties of temporary crosslinked networks.
          These studies will be compared with experimental data on the behavior of the
          F-actin cytoskeleton networks in cells.

		   John B. Ferguson passed away on December 11 2007.
		 Health problems forced John to retire in the middle of the Spring 2007 semester.
		 Gordon has written an <a href="http://www.physics.sdsu.edu/news/2007/12_001.html">obituary</a>,
		 to which Doc Morris and Don Cottrell have added some recollections.  The Department is establishing the
		 <a href="http://www.physics.sdsu.edu/philanthropy/jbfergusonfund.html">The John B. Ferguson Memorial Fund</a> to
		 provides grants to upper division Physics majors to pay for their textbooks.
		 The John B. Ferguson Fund will provide a lasting memory of John while helping our students.
