Click here for current Physics Positions AvailablePostdoctoral position in computational nuclear theory.(this position has been filled!).
A postdoctoral position in nuclear theory is available at the Physics Department at San Diego State University . We hope to begin review of applications soon, but will accept applications until the position is filled. The position includes benefits, is for one year, renewable up to three years dependent upon funding. Send a c.v. and names and contact information for two references to: Prof. Calvin Johnson, Physics Dept., San Diego State University, 5500 Campanile Dr, San Diego CA 92182-1233, or by e-mail to johnson at physics.sdsu.edu .
The position is funded by a grant from the Department of Energy and the National Nuclear Security Administration Office of Research. The title of the project is "Nuclear Level Densities for Modeling Nuclear Reactions: An Efficient Approach Using Statistical Spectroscopy." The main task of this position is to carry out this research program, so any applicant should read the technical description of the project (in a .pdf file). Much of the project will involve using Beowulf computer clusters. You do not need to be an expert in Beowulf clusters, but you do need to be experienced in numerical programming, preferably Fortran although C is acceptable, and comfortable in a Linux/Unix environment. All candidates for this position must have a PhD in Physics or Astronomy (a background in nucleosynthesis would prepare you well for this project).
The research will be carried out in collaboration with physicists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (specificially Frank Dietrich, Erich Ormand, and Petr Navratil) and while based at San Diego State you will be expected to spend one or two months of each year at Livermore; travel and room-and-board costs will be supported by the grant.
