Professor Burnett's teaching interests are in scientific instrumentation, electronics, and electrodynamics.

His current research interests are in instrument design and development, especially instrumentation for remote detection. He has active research in applications of nuclear magnetic resonance (nmr), nuclear quadruple resonance (NQR), and superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDS) for ultrasensitive magnetic detection and imaging.
