Public Lecture - The Story of Stopped LightSpeaker: Prof. Kim Griest, Dept of Physics and Astronomy, UCSD Topic: "Dark Matter and Dark Energy" Time: 7:30 PM, Thursday, May 9th, 2006 Place: North Education 60
Abstract: Atoms and everything mode of atoms including the stars, Earth and humans, constitute less than 5% of the material in the Universe. The vast majority resides in the invisible Dark Matter (25%) that hold galaxies together, and a mysterious vacuum energy called Dark Energy (70%) that controls the ultimate fate of the Universe. In this talk we will discuss these substances, as well as current and upcoming experiments working on unraveling these mysteries.
